Brute
Force
With a definite need for training, if not expertise, heavy
industrial machinery can be both time consuming and costly
for the occasional user. If the surface preparation of large
scale floors is not your usual bag, then it may well be
worth calling in a specialist, who can supply the men and
machinery to complete the job in the shortest possible time
frame.
One of these specialist flooring removal companies, is Terminator
Services (UK) Ltd, set up by businessman Martin Delbosq
to complement his other company, Delmar Flooring. Both companies
operate from premises in Lincoln.
The Terminator, hence the company name, is a ride-on floor
removal machine that originates from the US, and was designed
for difficult carpet removal jobs. The American company,
that designed and built the Terminator, have 25years of
experience in the carpet removal and installation business
and in the US the machine has become the standard for commercial
take-up and surface preparation.
Prior to setting up the company, Mr Delbosq carried out
research into the machinery available leading him to the
Terminator machine, and in his opinion it is by far the
best machine on the market for commercial surface preparation.
The Terminator is time-tested for speed of removal, ease
of preparation and consistent, reliable performance. Effective
with any carpet, the proprietary and stationary blade assembly
is forced between the bond of the covering and subfloor,
peeling of strips of carpet from the substrate. The machine’s
strength and versatility is shown when removing elastomeric
coatings from parking surfaces, concrete decks, boat decks,
neoprene coatings, rubber gym floors and soft sport courts.
It has also effectively removed laminate tiles and planking
along with conventional hardwood parquet and planking glued
to concrete surfaces.
Powered by Nissan’s fuel efficient H20 four-cylinder
propane engine and equipped with a catalytic convertor,
the Terminator reflects the companies’ commitment
to clean air and energy conservation.
Terminator Services has already carried out several high
profile contracts for high street retail department stores
with the machines, and works alongside several main contractors,
management groups, demolition companies, surface preparation
companies and flooring contractors.
Having just received delivery of two machines, and those
being added to the two already in operation, makes Terminator
Services the most equipped removal company in the country.
As well as these new machines, an extended portfolio of
services now includes closed circuit shot-blasting,
diamond grinding and scabbling.
Mr Delbosq believes that offering a complete service has
advantages for the companies he works with:
‘By keeping everything all under one banner the company
has only to approach one person and by using one contractor
it becomes more economical.’ He said.
Being in the flooring industry for some 27years, Mr Delbosq
has vast knowledge of the industry, along with great back
up from suppliers, manufacturers and his work force. This
has allowed him to build up a great relationship with all
clients.
‘Our men are all master tradesman and we also invest
in young people; sending them on college courses and training
events to equip them with the essential skills required.
Training the young for the future is vital, it is no good
living for today, you have to think about tomorrow.’
Terminator Services works all over the country and has even
carried out work abroad. The company initially set out to
complete one contract in Germany, but ended up taking on
two more.
The work that has been generated over the last year has
persuaded Mr Delbosq to appoint a full time contracts manager
to ease work load.
Mr Delbosq explains: ‘By making the appointment it
has helped free up my time so that I can concentrate equally
on both companies.
‘I am very much a hands on person and I go out on
every contract, working seven days a week for the business.’
Terminator services are happy to travel to any part of the
country to offer a free-of-charge demonstration of its services
to prospective clients, and along with being the first to
bring Terminator machines into the country, the company
are now the main UK dealers.
‘With a good year’s experience under our belt
we feel we can now offer the quality service required of
a dealer.’ Concludes Mr Delbosq.

tiles really warm to it
Knauf DIY, who previously brought us the strong, water resistant
tile backing board Aquapanel, have taken the product another
step forward with Aquapanel Thermal.
This new tile backing board for floors is not only light
but shares Aquapanel’s strength and moisture resistance.
It also offers excellent thermal insulation, making it ideal
for floors with under tile heating systems and because Aquapanel
Thermal is moisture resistant, it is suitable for any environment
where excess moisture can be a problem.
Aquapanel Thermal consists of a Polyfoam® core with
glass fibre reinforced polymer-modified cement faces on
both sides. Dimensionally stable, it doesn’t rot or
warp and provides full resistance to moisture absorption
and subsequent breakdown.
Additional benefits of Aquapanel Thermal over traditional
substrates include its being lightweight and easy to handle,
its keyed surface which is ready for tile adhesive, that
it needs no special tools thus saving time and money and
that it’s a dry process, eliminating unnecessary delays
associated with floor screeds.

| On-line
training for carpet professionals
Everyone knows the benefits of well trained sales staff.
It differentiates you from your competitors, maximises profits
and increases repeat business. Wools of New Zealand (WONZ),
has developed an on-line training programme, specifically
targeted at carpet retail professionals, but that is also
appropriate to anyone involved in the sale or promotion
of carpets and rugs.
High content wool carpets carry a premium price and therefore
require comprehensive product knowledge and sophisticated
sales techniques to achieve success. The WONZ web-based
training programme is a unique platform for acquiring indispensable
knowledge and skills that can be put into immediate effect.
Study can be done at the student’s own pace and at
both a time and place that is convenient. The site is not
only informative, but also free-of-charge and provides an
enjoyable mix of written information, visuals, animations
and interactive tests.
Mark de Jonghe (pictured opposite), sales manager, Kimbers
(Southern) Ltd, is the first UK graduate of the course:
‘The on-line course is challenging and fun. Although
I have been in the business of selling carpets for 23years,
I still picked up a lot of useful information and tactics.
‘Of particular interest was the section on personality
types, that broadened my understanding of the various ways
people shop. This is a great course for anyone in sales
- even those outside of the carpet industry.’
